What Our Summer Interns Have To Say
Life as a Summer Intern
Spending four weeks during the summer months in Matheson Ormsby Prentice is a fantastic and exciting experience. Some of our interns from the programme would like to share their experience with you...
In Matheson Ormsby Prentice, there is a real sense of team within the departments. I got to work alongside trainees, associates and partners who were all very willing to assign me tasks and invite me to client meetings which afforded me plenty of exposure to the firm-client relationship.

My first few days as an intern involved taking part in the firm’s induction programme and introductory sessions about Asset Management. In particular, I learned about Irish domiciled funds and the work the group does in structuring and managing these. I gained a great understanding of the management and servicing of investment funds and the intricacies of asset management.

As a summer intern I was involved in all aspects of deals and was really made to feel part of the team. On one particular occasion I recall sitting in on a conference call between a partner and a client and hearing the partner refer to some research that I had carried out. The satisfaction I felt still resonates.

The learning curve is always going to be steep when moving from the theoretical aspects of law school to the reality of legal practice, but at Matheson Ormsby Prentice every effort was made to make that transition as seamless as possible. What distinguishes Matheson Ormsby Prentice from the rest, is that rather than provide you with the information that you need to know verbatim, you are given the tools and skills to enable you to discover what you need.

There is a great mentoring system in the firm and a real sense of teamwork with everyone really working together. During my programme, I worked directly with the partners, associates and solicitors in my department, receiving great hands on experience in the workings and application of law, that is just not possible to receive in college. I was involved in some closings that were occurring during my internship and that was the most exciting work I was involved in, having a case explained to me and then being able to see it through to the end.
